Elsie and I always loved going to the mall with our mom growing up, even before we loved fashion. Our mom would always get us a soft pretzel at Auntie Ann's to share and it was always a fun treat. I still sometimes get a soft pretzel when I'm at the mall, as it reminds me of all those trips with our mom. Plus, soft pretzels are AWESOME! So we thought it would be fun to try and make our own at home. We made original and cinnamon sugar soft pretzels plus two kinds of sweet buttery dipping sauces. Delicious!
Soft Pretzels makes 8-12. Recipe adapted from here.
Needed: 1 1/2 cups warm water, 1 1/8 teaspoon active dry yeast, 2 tablespoon sugar, 1 1/8 teaspoon salt, 1 cup bread flour, 3 cups (all-purpose) flour, 3-4 tablespoon melted butter, course sea salt, cinnamon and sugar, 1 cup warm water, 1 tablespoon baking soda.
Dissolve the yeast in the 1 1/2 cups warm water. Stir in the sugar and salt. In a kitchen aid mixer (or a large bowl, working by hand) combine the bread flour, all-purpose flour, and yeast solution. Mix/knead until dough is elastic-like (4-6 minutes). Set dough in a greased bowl, cover and allow to rise for 1 hour. Once dough has risen cut it into 8-12 pieces and roll out into a long rope. Twist into a pretzel shape. Dip in a shallow bowl containing the 1 cup warm water and 1 tablespoon baking soda. Place an a baking sheet (that's been covered with parchment paper), cover and allow to rise for another 45 minutes to an hour. Brush on the melted butter. Top with either course salt or cinnamon sugar. And bake at 375 F for 10-12 minutes.
For the sweet butters: Combine 1 stick of softened (nearly melted) butter with either honey + nuts or raspberry jam. Stir to combine. You can store these in the refrigerator (covered) for up to a week to use on your pretzels or toast!
We hope you love these homemade pretzels as much as we do! xo. Emma + Elsie

Oh boy, favorite recipe yet!! I love love love soft pretzels, in fact, I'm from the same area as the Auntie Anne...actually she worked for my grandpa for a bit before she started her business. I've never actually tried making soft pretzels myself other then a fun elementary school project/lesson. I'm headed to the kitchen now...haha! :) Thanks for sharing, this just blessed my day!!

Perfect timing! I've been thinking non-stop about soft pretzels for some reason this week (even though I haven't had one in about two years) and I forgot about making them because we had a snowstorm that shut off our power for 2 days (electric stove = bane of my existence). Power is back on though and it's time to get my bake on.
